Some really great stuff on here! REVIEW FROM BRAINWASHED : After many years, the third instalment in Nurse With Wound’s classic Automating series of compilations has been unveiled. Digging up old nuggets from the last 26 years, this is another trip through the dustier, forgotten regions of Steven Stapleton’s back catalogue. Not quite as dazzling as the previous entries in the Automating series, this compilation still shows the strength of Nurse With Wound’s expansive approach to sound and most importantly, saves me a lot of leg work in tracking down old compilations. United Dairies The first two Automating compilations stick out as not only being great examples of compilations working as standalone albums but as two of the best releases put out under the Nurse With Wound name. Automating Volume Two was one of my first NWW purchases and it has remained one of my favourites consistently. As such, Automating Volume Three has a lot to live up to and although not as consistent as the earlier volumes, it performs admirably. “Antacid Cocamotive 93” mutates the '60s pop song “The Loco-Motion” into something stranger; the piece comes from the same sessions as The Sylvie and Babs Hi-Fi Companion and, like the rest of that album, is highly reminiscent of The Residents’ Third Reich’n Roll album. Elsewhere, “Beetle Crawls Across My Back” sees Nurse With Wound in rare melodic form; its eastern sounding strings subtly warped by Stapleton as what sounds like a didgeridoo joins in the jam. The song degenerates into a primal beat as Diana Rogerson delivers some truly unsettling vocals. It anchors the rest of the album around it, a definite centrepiece which is as good as any canonical Nurse With Wound piece and would have been perfectly at home on Rock'n Roll Station (recorded around the same time as “Beetle Crawls Across My Back”). “Ubu Noir” is another version of Stapleton’s rendition of the traditional song “Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair” which is quite a departure from the extant versions on She and Me Fall Together in Free Death and Rat Tapes Volume One. Here it sounds like a broken Kraftwerk crawling out of the darkness of a nuclear apocalypse. REVIEW FROM AQUARIUS : In 1986, Steven Stapleton released Automating Vol. 1, filled with some choice selections he had produced for various compilations during his previous eight years of existence as Nurse With Wound. Given just how much amazing material Stapleton produced in the prolific NWW catalog, it's not surprising that his tracks for compilations were pretty damn good even as some of these pieces were drastic remixes and edits of material already on other albums, or they were tracks that didn't quite 'fit' onto one of his already eccentric takes of industrial-psychedelic-concrete constructions by way of classic Surrealism. So, jump to 2010, and Stapleton has now released Automating Vol. 3 (yes, there was a Volume 2), with equally astounding results again demonstrating his studio magic. The compilation moves mostly in chronological order, starting with a track from 1984 and traversing almost to the present with a 2008 piece. The earliest number came from a Japanese compilation called Sound Cosmodel, spliced from metallic slashes and the spoken word of a breathy French woman, providing a typically unsettled Nurse collage. The comedy side of NWW comes by way of \"Antacid Cocamotive 93\" with a funhouse cover of the early '60s hit \"Do The Locomotion\" that nearly spins off the rails with Diana Rogerson offering her zombified vocals to accompany the warbling silliness of the tune. Another Rogerson duet appears by way of the track \"Beetle Crawls Across My Back\" recontextualizing the material that she and Stapleton used on one of the Chrystal Belle Scrodd records. Very creepy, dark atmospheres, with almost ritualist percussion buried way down deep upon which Rogerson snarls her nightmarish tale, you guessed it, about insects crawling on her back.\"Ubu Noir\" is a 2006 redux of \"Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair\" - the Appalachian standard that grew notorious via Patty Waters' version in the 60s. Here, Stapleton's cybernetic vocals rasp above blackened loops and leviathan plods. But perhaps the most atypical track is the remix that Stapleton did for the death metal band Cadaverous Condition. Given the uncanny success Stapleton had with the SUNNO))) remix a few years back, this shouldn't be too much of a surprise, as he stretches out the thunderous rhythms, adds haunted chorale loops, and smears the chugging riffs into chunks of mutant noise. Yeah, it's a diverse mix of material; but what Nurse With Wound album isn't? As they vanish, something sinister appears in their place. The image most prominent in my mind is of a furnace possessed by spirits best left unidentified, swelling into aggressive bursts of volume in increasing lengths as the track progresses, with a particularly bone-rattling eruption occurring just after the twenty minute mark. Frequently the sound hovers like thick, humid air, as if waiting for an unnamed menace to slither forth from the darkness. A subdued alarm bell appears out of the fog from time to time, commingling with faint metallic overtones on the fringe of perception while revenant gasps hiss in the mist. Even listening to the this track in the daylight, I have to say that I found it to be one of the more viscerally thrilling and frightening Nurse With Wound experiences I’ve had in a while, much like the gut feeling I used to get just before the initial drop on a roller coaster. As the last track in the Shipwreck series, “July 13” is quite the headcleaner. After the initial greetings, loops of the phrase “Welcome to Shipwreck Radio” are subjected to repeated unsettling voice manipulations that become a rippling landscape of their own, stretching syllables into unnatural technological groans. Each time the phrase returns, it is slower and contains more glitch material, eventually obfuscating the source completely. As the length of the recurring phrase increases, so too does the silence between the repetitions. The slower the voice gets, the more it sounds like broken zeros and ones, high-pitched tones with little musical value. Because of this, the track feels more like an algorithmic exercise than a creative one. I can’t imagine what was going through the minds of the Norwegians tuning in to this particular broadcast, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they smacked their radios a few times thinking something was broken. In some ways, the predictable pattern of “July 13” is the antithesis of the previous track’s ability to surprise, and it’s one I probably won’t return to frequently. Even so, the force of “June 22” alone is enough to make this release an invigorating addition to the group’s catalog. Just as the first volume was an effort to reshape the world around them in sound, the second volume of \u003cem\u003eShipwreck Radio\u003c\/em\u003e turns the world of Lofoten into a strange place occupied by distortions of the Arctic's natural sound world.\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Every last track starts with a warning, a little signature from Stapleton and Potter that must've announced the coming weirdness to everyone that had their radios set to the right frequency. \"BEEP, Welcome to Utvær,\" over and over again, in various forms, occupies the first seconds of every track. I have to wonder why, everyone knows what this is, the whole concept is too cool to ignore and, to some extent, the concept adds to the grandeur of the music. At times it almost seems like that infernal beeping is a necessary part of the music, as though Stapleton and Potter wanted to use it as an integral part of their construction and, at other times, it seems like an inexplicably placed marker for travelers who already know where they are. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the damn beeping is said and done with, the majesty of the work that follows is undeniable and in some ways, very much a return for Stapleton to his work on \u003cem\u003eSoliloquy for Lilith\u003c\/em\u003e. Gone are the signature Dadaist sound collage menageries or the out-and-out whacky constructions of found sounds and semi-krautrock influenced rock and in is the eerie, slowly moving ploughs of heavy, dirty soundscapes. There can be no doubt of Lofoten's remoteness nor of its strange openness, the absolute loneliness its landscapes must inspire after listening to both discs. In absence of chance to be left wandering in the snow or out on the sea during a blizzard, Stapleton and Potter have provided a chance to hear what it might feel like, in a slightly masked form.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile the duo, to a large extent, is masking the real properties of the sounds they recorded, the drama that their manipulations add to the samples is nothing short of necessary for the album and maybe even for the mythology and liveliness of the islands. It's hard not to imagine the ice-blue frames of sunken ships creaking beneath the water, fish swimming in and out of their halls, and perhaps stranger creatures waiting inside. \"June 6\" is especially effective in eliciting that shuttering, wavering, and wearying sense of ill fortunes and unspeakable terror. In some senses, however, I'm slightly disappointed that more sounds weren't left alone or simply edited only slightly. Many of the tracks seem to be fiercely aquatic or perhaps subterranean, but the sounds of Utvær could've been equally interesting and having a sense of where some of these sounds might've come from would've added to the intrigue of the islands and the whole project.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs it stands, \u003cem\u003eShipwreck Radio Volume Two\u003c\/em\u003e seems a tribute to exactly what its title implies. The haunted world of dead mariners, sunken ships, and impossibly dark caverns all get their share on this record. The only place where the program really changes is on \"June 19,\" where Nurse with Wound slowly builds a strange industrial disco composed of all manner of chains, sheet metal, and empty oil drums. Birds are plainly audible in the mix as are the swells that dominate most of the album. It's the best and most fun track on the album, partially because it stands out from the rest of the album so much, but mostly because the duo incorporate a wider variety of sounds within this one track. I can almost dance to it and the pseudo-melody that plays through the background is way too easy to hum for my own good. The results speak for themselves; the different resources integrate with each other perfectly to give an exceptional piece of music. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Soundpooling contains two tracks. The first, 'Soundpooling #3,' is the performance from Vienna. The performance is described as an improvisation on Salt Marie Celeste and the Echo Poeme releases. There are also elements of Angry Eelectric Finger scattered throughout the performance. The combination (or pooling to use the language of the album) of these different compositions works extremely well; the whispered intonations from the Echo Poeme material sounds like they were made to accompany the creaky, creepy drones of Salt Marie Celeste. In fact, the vocals sound much better here than they do on the 'proper' releases; the oceanic background makes them sound erotic and mysterious. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e As the improvisation progresses, it moves into completely new territories with only odd bits of sound acting as points of familiarity. The music is far more active and engaging than I was expecting. Explosions of noises that sound like they were spliced from a number of old records and cultured on a dish in dark, damp basement rock the atmosphere. I can only imagine how uneasy the audience must have felt listening to this in the flesh considering the lab coat uniform of the performers and the fact that the venue was an anatomy museum. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The second track is a new studio recording named 'In Swollen Silence.' It is an almost calming break after the tension of the live recording. Freida Abtan's performance and text is evocative and for the most part very beautiful, there are moments where the beauty is shattered by the sentiments of the words: 'your shadow ripped from you.' Stapleton throws a few curveballs during this piece that take me by surprise each time I listen to it (I won't elaborate as they are best experienced first hand). Shaved down to a mere duo featuring Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter, this is almost a tribute to the more ambient and free-form early to mid-period Nurse with Wound. The original mission statement from 1978 included a provision that Steven Stapleton didn't like \"songs\" and the last few full-length albums ('An Awkward Pause', 'Acts of Senseless Beauty', 'Who Can I Turn To Stereo' and 'Rock 'n Roll Station') have all been heavily song-based. Clocking in at under 40 minutes, this particular journey is comprised of three pieces: the two endpieces which linger around the 15-minute mark and the 8+ minute middle piece, whose title loosely translates to \"Up in the Air, Singing\" in Gaelic. Musically, it's perhaps the most intimate Nurse with Wound has been, with a particular, almost personal subtlety which I haven't detected probably since 'A Missing Sense.' The album opens with a warm underscore, scatterings of organic and electronic noises twitter and scurry by, accented with quiet, mumblesome voices, bees, finger piano or marimba (I can't tell) and various other sound effects -NOT- simply recycled from previous projects. It continues with an almost arguably surprising twist of events as the \"band\" jumps into full-force instrumental hyper Kraut-rock mode towards the end of the second track. The music and feel of the last track almost echoes the 'Musical Pumpkin Cottage'-era work from Stapleton with Tibet. The vocals repeat the title over and over again, comfortably easing any listener into utter bliss. Shaved down to a mere duo featuring Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter, this is almost a tribute to the more ambient and free-form early to mid-period Nurse with Wound. The original mission statement from 1978 included a provision that Steven Stapleton didn't like \"songs\" and the last few full-length albums ('An Awkward Pause', 'Acts of Senseless Beauty', 'Who Can I Turn To Stereo' and 'Rock 'n Roll Station') have all been heavily song-based. Clocking in at under 40 minutes, this particular journey is comprised of three pieces: the two endpieces which linger around the 15-minute mark and the 8+ minute middle piece, whose title loosely translates to \"Up in the Air, Singing\" in Gaelic. Musically, it's perhaps the most intimate Nurse with Wound has been, with a particular, almost personal subtlety which I haven't detected probably since 'A Missing Sense.' The album opens with a warm underscore, scatterings of organic and electronic noises twitter and scurry by, accented with quiet, mumblesome voices, bees, finger piano or marimba (I can't tell) and various other sound effects -NOT- simply recycled from previous projects. It continues with an almost arguably surprising twist of events as the \"band\" jumps into full-force instrumental hyper Kraut-rock mode towards the end of the second track. The music and feel of the last track almost echoes the 'Musical Pumpkin Cottage'-era work from Stapleton with Tibet. The audience responded with great enthusiasm. The show was recorded and released as an LP back in 2012. The ensemble went on to play a number of other live shows and the music changed and mutated each time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e***REVIEW FROM BRAINWASHED 12.10.15***  This is an expanded reissue of a 2012 album that documented two 2009 live performances in which Nurse With Wound, Julia Kent, and Italy’s Blind Cave Salamander teamed up for an improbable variation\/reinterpretation of NWW’s classic Soliloquy for Lilith album (an album that was largely the product of an unexpected and unrepeatable electromagnetic phenomenon).  The expansion in question is a third performance in an identical vein to the previous two.  Notably, however, that vein is not all that much like Soliloquy, which makes Cabbalism something separate and singular rather than just a mere live album.  In fact, it does not even sound much like NWW at all, which I suppose makes this a very successful collaboration.  While the third piece is not nearly divergent enough to warrant repurchasing the album for anyone who pounced on Cabbalism this first time around, the reissue is a very enticing package for those of us who unwisely slept on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ca href=\"http:\/\/www.icrdistribution.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eICR\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is easy to see why this project appealed to Steven Stapleton, as it is a fundamentally absurd and open-ended one.  Given that the original Soliloquy was largely the inhuman work of a feedback loop of effects pedals and a helpful magnetic field, anything improvised by a group of musicians armed with guitars, violins, cellos, and a singing saw is inherently destined to be unrecognizably different right from the start.  The sole apparent common ground between Cabbalism and Soliloquy is merely that there are some electronics making unpredictable sounds and that there is a similarly droning and hallucinatory aesthetic.  In fact, the first time that I ever heard Cabbalism (without knowing the backstory), I immediately assumed that Stapleton and Colin Potter were just doing some live processing on a performance by an ethno-ambient drone ensemble.  That is not the case at all, but if Stapleton sincerely set out to replicate the stark and alien beauty of Soliloquy, he was quickly buried under too many layers of other stuff to succeed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn general, all three performances are built upon a low drone that is increasingly embellished with buzzing crests of electronics, swells of feedback, and ominous metallic washes that sound like processed cymbals.  Unexpectedly, it is Julia Kent (apparently a member of Blind Cave Salamander at the time) who emerges as the most prominent and distinctive performer, as her mournful cello melodies give each its piece its own shape and feel.  As a result, \"Cabbalism I\" is the strongest piece, as Kent opens up with a darkly melancholy melody and is given plenty of space to make her impact.  In \"Cabbalism II,\" she steps forward with an appealingly see-sawing motif, but she rarely lingers in the foreground at all in the new \"Cabbalism III.\"  Notably, however, the third version sounds a lot like the first version might after being sucked through a black hole or something: there are snatches of familiar melody, but they are considerably more subsumed by the simmering electronic chaos around them.   That said, while Kent provides much of the structure and most of the album's \"hooks,\" it is Paul Beauchamp's singing saw that seems to be the ensemble's apparent secret weapon, as the real pay-off for each piece is a passage where Cabbalism unexpectedly blossoms into an understated rapture of lilting, fluttering, and swooping notes.  It's a lot like a fireworks display with no explosions at all, but an unexpectedly slow and beautiful descent of burning embers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf Cabbalism has any significant flaws, they are highly subjective and mostly related to what it is not.  For example, it is not Soliloquy for Lilith Redux nor does it particularly sound recognizably like anything that might have sprung from the mind of Steven Stapleton.  Another potential issue is that the new inclusion of \"Cabbalism III\" does not add much to the album other than increased duration: it is now three very similar variations on a theme rather than just two.  That should not come as a surprise though: if \"Cabbalism III\" were a masterpiece, Potter and Stapleton would obviously not have omitted it from the original release.  That said, however, the added duration is actually quite welcome, as Cabbalism was already a deep and immersive experience and now it is even deeper and more immersive.  As far as I am concerned, much more of a good thing is almost as satisfying as a better album might have been.  More importantly, when stripped of any NWW-related expectations and taken solely on its own terms, Cabbalism is quite an excellent drone album: it may not nearly be as gleefully deranged and surrealistic as any of Stapleton's other recent work, but the consolation prize is that it is still a hell of a lot more complex, unconventional, and unpredictable than most similar fare.  Anthony Dark Fat would be the album to end NWW's long and perversely prolific silence (it was explicitly billed as \"long-awaited,\" after all).  Alas, it is not exactly the bold new artistic statement that I was hoping for.  Instead, it is a sprawling collection of \"live\" recordings ranging from rehearsals to sound checks to actual gigs.  Despite its dubious hodge-podge origins, however, Dark Fat actually feels an awful lot like a studio album–quite a damn good one, even.  While longtime NWW fans will probably experience many flickers of recognition over the course of these two hours, Stapleton and his collaborators have so thoroughly reshaped and recontextualized everything that it all feels fresh, vibrant, inspired, and appropriately disorienting all over again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe best way to summarize this album is to say that it feels like Steven Stapleton assembled an entire village-worth of like-minded artists for a very abstract and cavalier traipse through some of NWW’s greatest hits.  In a way, I suppose that is exactly what he did, but the twist is that it was a very fitful, slow-motion, and \"revolving door\" process that spanned six years.  In any case, aside from the core group of Stapleton, Colin Potter, Matt Waldron, and Andrew Liles, Dark Fat features a head-spinning roster of avant-garde luminaries in cameo roles ranging from Jacques Berrocal to Stephen O’Malley to James Blackshaw.  As if that were not enough, it also features some unwitting contributions from Klaus Schulze, Michael Schenker, and Cream’s Jack Bruce (if the roll call during the final untitled track is to be believed).  Clearly, even the deceased were clamoring to get in on this party.  Naturally, that deranged eclecticism extends to the instrumentation as well, covering everything from Hawaiian guitars to saxophones to cornets to smoke bombs.  Given all that, it is unsurprising that Dark Fat is a deliciously difficult album to wrap my head around, as it is massive, freewheeling, and kaleidoscopic in the extreme.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLamentably, I do not have total recall of NWW's entire back catalog (does anyone?), so the only real \"hit\" that jumps out at me is \"Rock’n Roll Station,\" which turns up twice in impressively mangled form.  On \"Rock n Rolla 1959,\" the original groove is transformed by the addition of a laid-back bass line and a bizarre, stream-of-consciousness monologue from Jacques Berrocal.  Later, on the untitled album finale, the band reprises the song in more recognizable form, but stretches it out into a lazy 9-minute jam peppered with squalls of wah-wah guitar, hard rock shredding, stage banter, and bouts of extreme noise chaos.  If any one piece can be said to represent the entirety ofDark Fat in microcosmic form, it is undoubtedly that one, as a recurring theme throughout the album seems to be hallucinatory abstraction coupled with amusing nods to conventional rock tropes.  The lion’s share of the album, however, just feels like an amorphous and unpredictably evolving collage of everything NWW does best: ominous ambience, garbled vocal cut-ups, odd juxtapositions, snatches of old exotica records, and a host of electronic blurts and squiggles.  The sole significant exceptions are \"Devil Dreamin’\" and \"Devil is this the Night,\" as Huffin’ Rag Bluesvocalist Lynn Jackson returns for a satanic pair of blearily soulful noir-jazz numbers that actually feel like legitimate songs.  In addition to being the album’s finest moments, the Jackson pieces highlight yet another recurring theme that pervades this collection, which is inventively recalling the spirit of a previous NWW highlight rather than just explicitly reprising it.  Consequently, much of Dark Fat feels simultaneously new and familiar, like hearing some lost outtakes from a favorite album.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNaturally, a two-hour retrospective of soundchecks and rehearsals is going to have some faults, but Dark Fat actually has far fewer flaws than I would have expected.  The worst offenses are probably just that a few pieces overstay their welcome and that the band was definitely in a very self-indulgent mood at times.  Also, the variations on \"Rock’n Roll Station\" are not nearly as good as the original, though the intent was clearly aimed towards gleefully pulling it apart and détournement rather than something as banal as improvement.  A far more fascinating subject is how Stapleton inventively makes a virtue of Dark Fat’s flaws, as this seems like a totally phoned-in album on paper.  In reality, however, this eclectic, free-form grab-bag is actually one of the strongest NWW albums in recent memory.  It is not definitely not new for high art, low art, homage, surrealist lunacy, impish humor, and just general dicking around to all coexist on a Steven Stapleton album, but it rare for them all to do so quite Potter himself explained it to David Keenan in England’s Hidden Reverse: “What I sometimes did in the studio was to ‘over-use’ effects and processors to totally mutate a piece into something completely different” while Stapleton observed how “it was almost as though telepathic messages were sent over to Colin. [We’d] started an album [together at IC Studio] that was never finished. He [then] sent me some vague mixes, which were just what I had in mind. So, from that basis, I started putting the album together.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReview bu Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly :\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eOriginally 'Rock N Roll Station' was a CD from 1994, about twelve years after that released on CD and double LP by Beta-Lactam Ring Records and now again as a double LP. This one comes with an OBI in letterpress print and same for the insert. Back then, 'Rock 'N Roll Station' was quite a shock. We knew the nUrses spread their music wide but the 4\/4\/ beat of the title track was quite a surprise. 'I made a house record', head nurse Stapleton said, but of course, not all with a 4\/4 beat is a house record. The reciting text and sounds swirling in and out of the mix doesn't exactly\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eshuffle feet across the floor. But the whole use of rhythm on this album is surely something that is inspired by dance music. The tribalistic drumming in 'Two Golden Microphones' for instance, along with didgeridoo is quite hypnotic; the voice of Chrystal Belle Scrodd is the reminder that this is indeed Nurse With Wound. In 'The Self Sufficient Sexual Shoe' there is even a drum machine, which I guess is something of a rarity in the world of Nurse With Wound. Overall, the use of rhythm works quite well here; it hammers away, exotic, minimal, strange, 'house' (you don't have to call it that) and within the studio band that Nurse With Wound is, there is a lot of room to add all these little sounds and effects. It is easier to say this is a dub record than a house record, if you catch my drift. The space they create is filled with echo, reverb, and lots of other treatments of sounds, voices, guitars, best exemplified on 'A Silhouette And A Thumbtack (Dance in Hyperspace)'. It makes this very much a Nurse With Wound record, the studio-as-instrument approach works once again like clockwork. This re-issue contains one track, a different version of ' Subterranean Zappa Blues (Alternate Mix)', so completists should take notice.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003ePotter\u003c\/em\u003e would quickly become a key player in \u003cem\u003eNurse With Wound\u003c\/em\u003e’s productions, a position he continues to fulfil to this day. From their past, we know they can create such a concise piece of music with a proper start and end. In 'Shipwreck AWOL', they (Steve Stapleton \u0026amp; Colin Potter) build their piece as one long brush stroke, building and building towards that cascading climax, cutting out at the peak of it all. By that point, it is locked in an industrial rhythm and ends like a balloon escaping air. The title piece has a nice rhythm to get the proceedings together. Around this mid-tempo drum loop are stretched ghostly voices from the original sound material. They perform a requiem for those who lost their lives at sea. However, Stapleton was soon to set the record straight. Although certain similarities are obvious, Bladder Flask’s work was a lot less refined than NWW, ‘…a seemingly random mix of Dada, Free Improvisation and Musique Concrete – with a big dollop of absurdism thrown in for good measure, sounding at times as though The Goons had somehow gained control of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop!…’\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn 1981 there were plans for a second Bladder Flask album to be issued on United Dairies but (for various reasons) the project was shelved.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWith the 40th anniversary of the One Day I Was So Sad… LP, Richard Rupenus approached Steven Stapleton with a view to him remixing\/reworking some Bladder Flask material, an invitation which Stapleton was happy to accept. However, rather than merely remixing\/reworking existing Bladder Flask, Stapleton has created a brand new work which magnificently fuses both artists’ sense of the absurd.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReview by Freek Kinkelaar in Vital weekly : The late 70s and early 80s were amazing times for experimental music and DIY artistry. So much adventurous music found its way to eager listeners, quite a few of whom would become artists themselves. Truly fertile sound grounds. One of these adventurous records was the wonderfully titled ‘One Day I Was So Sad, The Corners Of My Mouth Met And Everybody Though I Was Whistling’ album by the equally wonderfully named Bladderflask. Behind the Bladder was, in fact, Richard Rupenus, who also appeared in Mixed Band Philanthropist with Nurse With Wound’s Steve Stapleton and The New Blockaders project. As you can tell, this was also a time when choosing a band name was a lot of fun. The bond between Stapleton and Rupenus provided the world a new version of The New Blockaders’ album Changez Les Blockeurs, when Stapleton released a cover of the whole album some years ago. In 2021, a surprise lathe cut album entitled Backside was released by United Diaries in an edition of 100 discs with handmade covers. The album was created by Stapleton, Rupenus and Andrew Liles, making good use of fragments of old Bladderflask-material courtesy of Rupenus. Featuring the tracks Backside and MDZhB (Chernobyl Picknick) the record sold out in the blink of an eye. To compensate potential listeners who missed out the opportunity (and the funds) to buy the lathe cut, its music has now been re-released with the 20-minute bonus track Backside (Cloud Chamber). So what is this rarely-head album all about? The opening track, Backside, is a more chaotic, unstructured affair with lots of concrete sounds-going-ons. As such, it is reminiscent of the original Bladderflask album and perhaps even Nurse With Wound’s debut with both projects sharing a similar outlook on abstract sound. MDZhB (Chernobyl Picknick), on the CD retitled Chernobyl Picknick, and Backside (Cloud Chamber) are far more ambient affairs. Here, we get proper doses of what The Nurse does so well: creepy atmospheres, lots of reverb, gloom, doom and room, with random sounds thrown in. It shares familiarity with the ambient waves of Nurse With Wound’s Soliloquy For Lilith, and do I recognize bits and pieces of the original Bladderflask album thrown in? I used to have that record decades ago, and listening to Backside makes me want to hear it again. With the considerable amount of music currently being released, it is perhaps more challenging to choose what is actually good and what can be neglected. A good drone is a horse’s bone to a dog and all that jazz. Personally, I consider Backside a very worthwhile release in the canon of both Bladderflask as Nurse With Wound.
